I have been studying some very active clouds all day and have seen some really interesting things!  I have been seeing formations similar to this quite often, but this is the first one I was able to photography during formation.  I looked at the links above and am trying to understand if these are “baby” Fluctus clouds during the process of trying to become “real” ones?  I am not sure where to post this, but they look kind of like waves to me, so here you are!  I have made a collage of sorts with three different images/stages of development.  Thanks for any input!  I have lots of photos to sift through, but this was what I wanted to find out about first.

No doubt about it Ramona, you captured KH. Nice pictures and certainly no baby’s but mature fluctus. Difficult to capture them in time since they don’t live long. I suppose you must have seen them dissipate into cloudy chaos. And there is indeed also some KH in former pictures. KH does very well in this topic named ‘Waves’. Michael created the topic for pictures that can be associated with all kind of waves, B&W or in color, surreal or real, whatever comes to mind.

Now Keelin surpises with a great question mark and the intriguing question whether waves can pose questions.

Oh, how exciting!! Thanks for verifying my deductions!  And, in fact, they bring little BUT questions to me, as I go through the learning process!  ;-) I like to study the clouds as they change and understand how certain formations, etc. come about.  This is a series that I took with my phone as I was driving to an appointment.  Questions abound!!  The question brought to my mind – are these lenticular clouds that are trying to form Fluctus clouds?

        Thanks so much!

You certainly look around Ramona and you might be right, but whether fluctus is about to form or even already left its wavy state behind is not verifiable imho. Maybe one must be able to observe the development for a longer time to be able to decide on it.  The right conditions for fluctus are not really visible, that is to say the existence of two sheering layers of air of different humidity (among other conditions) is not visible as such. Only the effect of it in the form of clouds and fluctus is. Googling around I found this instructive video about KH you might be interested in. You can see fluctus also occurs in the clouds of Jupiter. Have fun with it.

Ahhhh, good point(s), Hans! I should pay more attention to the thread that I post in! I love your KH clouds! I have been watching the skies a lot the last few days and I have seen what appear to be many of these developing and dissipating very quickly – I can see why it is hard to capture them in a photograph! I am actually a photographer first, and then a cloud fan, and I have quite a bit of time during the day to go outside with my camera and watch the clouds develop. It is cool to be learning about them and watching them! I will see if I can delete this image and repost it somewhere else!

As far as I know, there is only a short timeframe after submission in which you can edit a posted image/comment via your account profile. Be that as it may, the photo you’ve shared here certainly brings a smile, Ramona. And I would agree with Hans, it has a charming elephant-like character, a very young one at that! And isn’t well known they like the water? So maybe this one is running to play in the waves? Hans’s lovely image above looks like deeper waters, so here are some low ones, good for a little one to have splash in.

IMG_0238editI have been studying the International Cloud Atlas and trying to learn how to classify clouds. Looking at this image, are the fluffy ones in the front cumulus and the lighter ones in the back altocumulus? Are they trying to be KH clouds or are the wave like parts just coincidental?  Thanks!

Ramona, I do see these K-H wannabees too, but I don’t think they are it. I think the conditions are not quite right. It looks like you need to have laminar flow (no turbulence) in both the lower and upper layers moving at different speeds. This is more likely achieved in a case where there is a stable ground layer (like in a valley or in a calm air mass) with some soft winds above it. At higher altitudes (say where altocumulus clouds live), conditions can exist too because there is less turbulence there. But where these pop-up cumulus clouds are, there is quite a bit of turbulence. For one, there is a lot of convection, which is what generates these cumulus clouds. The convection interferes with the laminar flow.

To be clear, the K-H phenomenon is itself a type of turbulence, but it occurs only at the contact surface, In the upper and lower layers, the flow is laminar.

But don’t be discouraged, K-H do show up from time to time. Just keep looking and carry your camera.

I think I already posted this timelapse. I saw a cloud that looked like it was going into K-H. But it dissipated before K-H fully formed.

Ramona, frequently looking at cumulus clouds I experienced that often these single KH waves can be seen. Maybe not that special when they are in a row at the more precise edge between two distinct sheering layers of air, but nevertheless…

Keelin gave the little elephant the opportunity for a nice Little Splash. It must have left this pattern on the surface of the water.

Very clever title, Hans! … and here’s the little elephant back for more waterplay, with his blue eye checking us out.

Very funny Keelin, the title as well! You have a keen eye to spot this one and he seems to be on the spotting track himself too. I will better do no foolish things. He seems to be determined.

Nice video George about suspected KH or not. You seem to have the same experience I described that these wannabee (or not?) KH’s appear more often. On your video they are really trying to develop as proper KH but don’t succeed in the end. Nice catch in the first place. Still KH is certainly possible in cumulus clouds although one might not expect such distinct sheering layers to let them grow properly. I’ve seen several on the cloudspotter stream and even captured one myself with the app.

So lucky, indeed, to catch the wannabes and those that became. No K-H in the waves below. They couldn’t seem to decide which direction to take.

For to long no waves. Don’t let us be mislead. No ruffled contrail feathers but Crosscurrents. A strikingly perfect fitting title for the scenery you captured Keelin.

I’ve been away from the forum for a few days. I see some amazing shots on all topics.

Since Ramona brought it up, I have been looking for more KH wannabies, Here are two, very fleeting.
