George PreoteasaParticipantTwo pictures, one “as is”, the other enhanced to intensify the colors and reduce the light. I can see three rings of red: one complete just around the sun, a second almost complete and a third incomplete, just an arc at the top. I observed this last weekend and took shots with my iphone. I regret not taking the time to take some better pictures

George PreoteasaParticipantI had trouble uploading, that’s why they came as two posts,
Question: is it possible to upload more than one picture in one submission?

George PreoteasaParticipantHygge, not sure if you’re joking, I don’t think it was Saharan dust. That would have had the opposite effect, making things dull. And I am in NY, not in the way of the westerlies that would carry that dust. Here, like in much of western Europe the flow is from the west.
Ignoring the optical effect, look at those clouds. I guess that’s what you call makerel sky?

ParticipantWell, I was half joking, George. The quote below came from a quick search which showed Saharan dust over Florida in 2012.
‘Beautiful sunsets are observed since the Saharan dust clouds resides so high in the atmosphere. The dust particles act to scatter certain wavelengths of light, allowing red hues to be illuminated.’

ParticipantI would not disagree, George. The new ICA does not recognise mackerel. Undulatus.
