Very nice, Michael. I like the soft colors. Here in NY we had some intense colors yesterday. At some point, one would think lava was pouring from the sky. (I did not adjust colors, they are quite close to what the eye could see.)

Great start of Volume III Michael. And amazing lava colors against two very different skylines George.

What a grand finale we had to Sunrise/Sunset II with fantastic colors from Michael, George and Hans. Still feeling the warmth of those spectacular images. Now Michael has launched us again with no less a splash of color and awe.
George, I love these hot copper colors you’ve captured! And Hans’s cool waves of Asperitas follow just in time! The mention of lava sent me spelunking for this one.

Beautiful captures of days’ beginnings and endings, Hans and Michael! The colors can be so rich sometimes. And then there are occasions when an extra breath of quiet observation offers hints of a subtlety that may come alive with just a nudge of contrast in the processing. Late in the afternoon, the sky held such promise.

This Subtle Beauty is a true impressionistic beauty Keelin thanks to your perspective observations. You certainly have an eye for it. I love these vague upward waving structures behind the contrasting thicket.

Love those Lennies, Hans, and the soft color palette of In Between is very soothing – perfect for restoring balance after a complicated day.
Michael, there is something so intriguing about Arizona Sunset #86, as if it has a story to tell that it’s only hinting at. Those subtle waves above the petit cloud keep tugging my eyes and up and up. A most interesting effect to feel from an image that in itself is not moving.

Nice clouds, Ariana. I guess many have a similar shot – mine is pre-digital so essentially lost.
It is worrying that the USGS are predicting the Hayward Fault could produce an earthquake soon. I note the USGS office in CA is nearer San Diego!
-
April 23, 2018 at 3:52 am #270773Ariana CohenParticipant
I’m sure many have a similar shot and doubtless many of those are far better than what I captured. Attracting photographers of all skill levels is the “price” we pay to live somewhere so gorgeous and iconic :)
Luckily there are a few seismology labs in the Bay Area that track the daily quakes and are working hard to find ways to predict when the next big one one will hit. I try not to worry about it too much, though. We all live with the daily awareness that it can (and will) happen at any time. The best we can do is have an earthquake kit, an evac plan/meeting place, and tell our people we love them each morning when we leave and each night before bed.

What a gorgeous photo, Ariana! The headlands above the bay, where I imagine you were positioned to take this shot, are always chilly and quite windy. Your timing and willingness to endure the elements are appreciated! Hope to see more from you here on the forums.
And Hans, your three most recent images are simply stunning. I cannot choose a favorite, for each one evokes a different emotion, while all inspire a splendid sense of awe.
The photo below is from the same sunrise moments as The Next Morning (a few posts above), taken a couple of years ago in Ketchikan Harbor, Alaska.
The Same Morning
-
April 19, 2018 at 12:38 pm #270220Hans StockerParticipant
The Same Morning might be not the same as the Next Morning (qué???…) but they are both very nice and gentle colorful wide views of a beautiful Canadian sunset, Keelin.
And what a great view with sunset over the Golden Gate bridge, Ariana. Warm colors although it might have been chilly where you took the picture as Keelin wrote.
Just leaving now for a bit more then a week. Not by plane, but by car.
-
April 19, 2018 at 3:07 pm #270234Patricia L KeelinParticipant
This is the surprise of that sunrise, Hans! The color shift was fascinating to watch on the quiet approach to the harbor. Here is another photo from the series where you can see how the peach turned pink and the blue took on a new shade as well.
Another week+ of elsewhere for you? May your skies be filled with wonders that delight and your travels by any means go smoothly!

Thank you, Keelin and Hans! As a newbie to CAS and it’s forums, I so enjoy everyone’s gorgeous images and kind words to each other. I volunteer out in the headlands and I’m blessed to see this view in all it’s ever-changing beauty each week. And as an “office dweller” day-to-day, I crave the winds and wilds of the coastline and the precious moments I get to spend just standing and breathing.
Safe travels, Hans, and I look forward to more of your and Keelin’s images.

George, Just after sunset is a lovely shot — the tower perfectly centered ‘neath that heavy, luscious blanket of deep purple with warm, rosy highlights in between. I feel settled and content to rest in place by this image you’ve shared with us.
And Hans, what an incredible photo with those bright/dark striations balancing the hot focal point of setting sun. Those silhouetted island clouds seem to beckon, hinting at distant isles — an invitation to dreamland?

Very nice shots, Hans, Keelin, Michael. I particularly like the cloud striations and the gradual change in the color of the sun in Hans’ “Just before hiding behind the horizon”.
We had a big storm in NY last week, it swept the whole NE of the country. There were even a few F0 tornadoes, though not in the City. But it went by fast and behind the storm the sky was awesome. Hard to capture, but here a try.

-

Well these pastels are very gentle Keelin. When you wish differently, I know you use a rather wide angle and then it is not always easy to cut out the colorful or distant parts. One way or the other, it is the composition that makes the picture.

No Doubt you were in a magical place, Hans. I love how the colors intensify as each moment passes at day’s end. In your image above, I especially like how the tree on the right appears to be painting in a bit of its own dark hue to the approaching night scene.
Here, again, simple pastels bring a soft ending to the day.
-
June 13, 2018 at 12:34 pm #279841Hans StockerParticipant
Yes a magical place Keelin, but also a magical moment. There is this short span of time at the end (or beginning) of the day that the magic appears and gradually disappears. It is called the golden hour, but I think its shorter.
Funny, I did not notice the finger-painting tree yet.

Hygge, you are quite right not to buy kitsch although I tried to sell it that way. And thanks for compliments. Sometimes nature shows colors that seem to be unreal. This picture I enhanced a bit, but be sure that the colors shown were all there in reality.
Michael. I don’t know what you did to produce your “garish”. Very funny in the first place. And a real surreal (…?….) abstract for sure! I am wondering about the separate blues on the bottom of the picture. Maybe a distinct shadow in which the reds of the setting sun are not reflected? Intriguing.
After kitsch and garish this one from my archive seems to be applicable (be sure: it is like it really was with just a bit extra contrast where it may be not needed?).

I’m not sure that there is such a thing as a subdued sunset in Arizona. Maybe its the one with no clouds. Every time I tried to rein in #88 it died. The blue band i think was the edge of a anti-crepuscular like below.

Thanks, Hans, I have been scratching my head all day trying to think of his name. But it wasn’t Keelin’s lovely pastel that was the cause, rather Michael’s Arizona Sunset#88 (August 24, 2018, above). Googling Rothko just now this came up

Don, Ha! It takes a bit of magic but not witchcraft to catch a unique Arizona Sunset. Monsoon cells offer short lived windows of light giving color to various parts of an evening show.
