ParticipantPerhaps no luggage at all is required to have fun with these shots.

ParticipantWhat marvellous depths you plumb in your skies, MikeL. You capture the many patterns the clouds conjure up – and patterns they seem to be, seldom just random, often layered. I guess these are monochrome.
That being said your first picture is a first indeed for me – I am totally nonplussed. (That is in the OED sense, surprised, confused, flummoxed, not the American informal, unperturbed).
P.S. I was hearing on the BBC World Service Science Hour tonight about research aimed at exploiting the infra-red technology largely lying dormant (since our eyes don’t see it) within our mobile phones (for farming). Are you able to shoot clouds in the infra-red, I wonder, MikeL? I guess it is unlikely without software to make it visible.
P.P.S. I have been racking my brains to overheated as to your title…

Participanthygge, Being free of preconceived notions is the idea of no luggage. As you say, depths are plumbed when free to do so. I play with ” balance’ in these 3 pictures. Contrast between line and shape , between textures , form and flow, between white and black ( of course) etc etc,,working together and in opposition to create some kind of “balance”;thats the idea with the observer flying thru these cloud pictures.
I believe, or at least have read,,that just about all digital camera sensors see further into the infra red than the human eye/brain. And Canon makes a camera just for astronomy buffs that goes way further into infra red. Often while processing digital shots, things pop out in the picture that weren’t observed originally.

ParticipantOK, MikeL,I am with you now – you certainly got a great balance.
I was worried about whether my brains should have been wracked or racked (OED says its complicated but either will do) so I stumbled across the third OED explanation:
Wrack (also rack) n. a mass of high, thick, fast moving cloud.
That’s a new one on me.

ParticipantThis site prefers “rack one’s brains” as “wrack” would mean “wreck”. http://grammarist.com/usage/rack-wrack/
I’ve always taken a “wrack of clouds” to refer to a storm-blown wreck of low cloud, “scud” in other words or “stratus fractus”. Although all the sources keep referring to it a “high” cloud, I suspect this may be that although the writers know about words, they know little about clouds. Although high clouds can be seen to be fast-moving, it’s much more likely to be seen in low clouds.
The following, from J R R Tolkein, doesn’t really help the argument one way or the other but I thought I’d drop it in anyway.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tower high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”
[Passage stumbled across whilst looking for “wrack” on this site: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/109526-there-peeping-among-the-cloud-wrack-above-a-dark-tower-high%5D

ParticipantThank You Gini. Sometimes when i process cloud pics, I get lost in them. Its no wonder I am so far behind in taking them thru editing. Below is a shot representing a slightly different perspective. With a overcast lite gray alto sky, capturing lower cumulus in various stages of disarray , underneath, makes for a kind of role reversal in tones, and some visual fun to get lost in.

ParticipantMikeL, I think this one really comes across as 3D. What fun indeed; and almost a hint of K-H at top right. Ta ever so.

ParticipantH, Yes , lighting has so much to do with ” sculpting” the subject for 3 D visual. I don’t recall time of day on the above shot but I can see I took advantage of a slightly muted sun and exposed for the highlites allowing for a greater latitude in brightness of the rest of the scale during processing. Below is another exercise in 3d but done in composition and hard contrast with less emphasis on texture.

ParticipantYes Gini!, there is a serendipity to it that gladdens the spirit. Thats one way to put it anyway, but im happy to have touched that mystery with the photo.
Below is one that uses much less contrast or rather explores ” that mystery” by the way of many gray tones, or subtlety of gray tones. Like you Gini, this one moves me and I don’t kno why or how.
