I do not know, and I stand to be corrected upon this posting, but clouds occur on our neighbour planets.

The CAS’ remit does not seem to disallow postings about clouds not Earth bound so here goes.

Upon planet Venus a remarkable global cloud swept across its entire surface.

News from the BBC News website as of 17th January 2017

CAS – Question for you, please.  Is it ok to post comments, news articles about clouds on our solar systems planets?  Maybe, gas clouds of inter stellar origin etc?  They are, after all, clouds.

Laurence, whilst you wait for a formal CAS response, you have carte blanche to post about such clouds in the Odds & Ends thread. Thus spake a one time moderator Andrew Pothecary – O&E is constrained only to that which you think might interest the Forum. In this instance you are right since I find it interesting too. Thank you.

Clouds on other planets are fascinating. Of course they are relevant to the Society! Here, for instance, is a very peculiar cloud formation around the north pole of Saturn. We are featuring in Sunday’s Cloud a Day. It is known as ‘Saturn’s hexagon’, and it was first spotted in the early 1980s. There is no clear consensus on how it forms and why the hexagon has such straight sides. It might be something to do with oscillations produced by the shearing effects of the winds encircling the planet’s north pole.

Thanks kindly, Gavin, for your comforting reply.

In re-assurance of your reply and the information you provided – much appreciated – I would like to offer these three rather enthralling links about planet Saturn’s mysterious and very intriguing hexagonal cloud formation on its “north pole”.

Here they are with complete and short description:-

All the links are wedded to the NASA Astronomy Picture Of the Day website.  Well worth a daily visit – clouds very often feature with really remarkable images.
