November 23, 2020 at 9:05 pm #454118 Peter RoperParticipant Peter RoperParticipantThese clouds were spotted by a friend of mine whilst walking around Cheddar reservoir, I saw the same from Westbury sub Mendip. Unfortunately only an iPhone pic.

November 24, 2020 at 7:18 pm #454312 Gregory VenarskyParticipant Gregory VenarskyParticipantIndeed they are my friend! Wonderful example as well. Technical name is Stratocumulus Fluctus I think. Nice shot!

November 24, 2020 at 8:45 pm #454326 Ruth QuistParticipant Ruth QuistParticipantPeter, Fluctus is one of my favorite cloud formations.

February 4, 2021 at 6:27 am #470197 Julia LongParticipant Julia LongParticipantKelvin–Helmholtz instability?
-
February 4, 2021 at 1:53 pm #470232 Hans StockerParticipant Hans StockerParticipantI understand you suspect it to be KH, but I have doubts Julia. Best case it has been KH where the crests don’t show anymore. In any case you spotted a situation in the sky where you might find KH. Anyway a nice sunset.
-
February 4, 2021 at 3:38 pm #470240 Julia LongParticipant Julia LongParticipantI couldn’t pull over fast enough. Everything was changing so rapidly. I took the long way home to avoid traffic and was rewarded with an amazing sunset display! Pulled over twice!

February 5, 2021 at 2:36 am #470316 Ruth QuistParticipant Ruth QuistParticipantLooking like a group in a boat. Hoping I caught a Fluctus. Please, any expert assistance in this cloud formation. any expert assistance in this cloud formation.

February 5, 2021 at 5:02 am #470328 Gregory VenarskyParticipant Gregory VenarskyParticipantRuth, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I do not think those happen to be fluctus only because of the fact that the wave-like structures are not all going the same way. I believe they are just altocumulus cloudlets.
-
February 5, 2021 at 5:52 pm #470418 Ruth QuistParticipant Ruth QuistParticipantGregory, I see now that the waves need to go the same direction. Thanks so much. I will take some cloudlets though in my boat.

February 7, 2021 at 12:03 pm #470589 Philip HallParticipant Philip HallParticipant like this? like this?
-
February 7, 2021 at 4:53 pm #470632 Hans StockerParticipant Hans StockerParticipantYes Philip. That’s a nice example of KH imo.
-
February 7, 2021 at 6:46 pm #470639Franz Ossing ParticipantHelmholtz would have taken the shifted “t” (helmholzt) as a proof of the 2nd law of thermodynamics’ entropy 😛
