I don’t know if James Turrell has been mentioned on the CAS site before, but surprisingly my search turned nothing up. But if I missed something, another mention won’t hurt.
I’ve just visited James Turrell’s SkySpace at the Tremenheere Sculpture Garden, Penzance. There’s another of his SkySpaces at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield. I think many CAS subscribers would find his work worth investigating. I knew him from a Dr James Fox TV documentary on land art a couple of years ago and was a little sceptical, but actually to visit the Tremenheere SkySpace was a very exciting experience.
Google, YouTube will give you the idea, but no substitute for a visit!

That sounds interesting, Geoff. I must google the SkySpace. I am always intrigued by land art. The latest I read about was
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/past-six-days/2017-04-08/saturday-review/andy-goldsworth-the-natural-world-is-not-confined-to-fields-and-woods-vx70h9jd5The article does not actually say land art, but what else. In case you face a price barrier I will highlight a few things from the article
* ‘Leaning into the wind: Andy Goldsworthy’ is the title of a new film, sequel to ‘Rivers and Tides’ 2001.(see YouTube)
* It’s all about “lineage” in this artist’s world
* He travels to see difference and stays put to witness change
* As well as permanent sculptures he makes ephemeral pieces – a huge photographic archive charts these and forms the basis of his booksThe problem for CAS is that land artists don’t seem to put clouds at the fore. But the necessity for photographs reminds me of the CAS Forum B&W threads where contributors are creating an abstract art form of cloud photos…. capturing the ephemeral.

Here is more “land art” by Turrell:
See the Spaces tab. There are some traces of clouds, but the focus is “celestial”.

It’s true that land art doesn’t necessarily feature clouds. Dr James Fox’s feature on Turrell’s SkySpace at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park shows how this work is certainly conceived as a way of experiencing the sky. On Youtube it starts at 5min26sec in on Part 4 of Forest, Field and Sky – art out of nature. All 4 parts are worth a look.
Sorry, but I have no idea how to insert a live link. Much better to visit the real thing at Tremenheere or Wakefield anyway.

Fancy buying a dead volcano – lateral thinking.
This guy seems to photograph land art and exploit cloud

I visited another of James Turrell’s SkySpaces yesterday at Houghton Hall, near King’s Lynn in Norfolk UK.
Again, very impressive. While I was there the sky was overcast Stratocumulus and not the most spectacular, but the very selective view from SkySpace helps you appreciate the subtleties and changes within a small area of sky. By removing the perspective it brings the sky down very close.
Visiting is highly recommended, especially this summer while there is an exhibition of Richard Long’s work too.
I’ve discovered a 4th UK Turrell SkySpace at Keilder Forest. On my list for long weekends away.

And I was happy to see a view from one of James Turrell’s Skyspaces as the Cloud of the Day on 12th Sept. Thanks Sarah and Gavin too!
