      Some time ago I took this picture of a detail of the edge of a much larger roll-like cloud.

      Here’s the larger picture. At the top left you can see wha’s left of the eruption-like cloud two minutes later.

      I wonder if this might be a specific phenomenon. I appreciate any comment.

      Very thought provoking, Hans. I don’t have your answer, but from Eric Wilcox ‘Clouds’ I wonder if your ‘roll’ is upwardly constrained by ‘a warm layer of stable air’. Then your eruption might be a bubble of turbulence which spurts up but soon dissipates?

      P.S.: the second picture with the overview shows the leftovers of the eruption-like detail on the top right.
