      2022 08 30_Rippon Lodge Dr. looking NNW, Fairfax, VA_2 for e-mail

      Any thoughts on what the top-most layer of clouds in this photo are? I always thought of a cumulonimbus cloud as being an ominous topping to a tower of fat, grey , fluffy clouds. These clouds were far enough away and obscured by trees that i couldn’t tell. FWIW: thunderstorms were predicted for the hour after this photo was taken.   —Sheila

      You are right about what a Cb must look like, but as in this case one does not always has a good view on these massive cloud structures. In this case I think you are right that a lot of the approaching Cb is hidden by other clouds in front of it. I go for a yes for a cumulonimbus.
