ParticipantA beautiful launch for Volume IV Clouds of Colour, Michael! Hard to believe how quickly we reached the limit in Volume 3 which ended with those spectacular wild vistas by you and Hans.
Having been out of town and out of reach for a more than a week left me hungry to see what others have been seeing. Looking up held some comfort, knowing it’s the same sky that connects us all.
Below, a sky that surprised me with its unexpected sprinkle of bright spots holding out against stormy greys. I decided to leave in the tip of a tree in this time to give some sense of scale.

ParticipantWow, what a gorgeous shot with great sense of energy, Michael. My eyes continue to scan it, expecting somehow to catch it in motion.
Quite awhile ago, in one of the early B&W volumes, I remember your mentioning the trick of inverting an image as a way of exploring its possibilities. I enjoy that attitude of pure curiosity, venturing just to see beyond what’s already been seen. And like you, I find it often delivers surprising results. So I thought, why not try it with a color photo? The original of the image below was rather dull, and I wished for a more dramatic effect. Inverting the color brought out the magic, and that wisp which was so faint against a pale blue sky now looks as if it could indeed be an emerging genie. And if there were two more wishes to be granted…. Ummm, best be careful with that thought!

ParticipantI left wit post number 100 on Volume III and now I find on the recently started Volume IV by Michael already a lot of beauties. Among them Aladdin’s lamp by Keelin. I just read some Greek myths and one can learn from them that it is best to be careful with what you wish. It can (or in the case of the Greek Gods: will) turn against you. But there is one thing I don’t have to wish for, because it is already there and it is this thread – and others – on the forum. Great wavy navy start and great Arizona color #44. There are two with this number and both very nice, but I mean the second one with the fragile structures of a developing (or annihilating?) altocumulus.

ParticipantA warm welcome back, Hans! And what a splendid image to share with us upon your return. Love that song too, a favorite by the master lyricist, who ends his Cloudy ode, from which you’ve quoted above, with these final words below.
These clouds stick to the sky
Like a floating question–why?
And they linger there to die
They don’t know where they’re going, and, my friend, neither do I…. -

ParticipantHans, glad I took a breath before I saw your Sky-high Jellyfish. It looks to have had a long venture from the very depths of the sea. And isn’t the sea where most clouds are born? Stunning, but not stinging, this one is!
Michael, I’ve been meaning to compliment you on Arizona Colors #77 & 78. I’ve taken photos of similar skies, but not had the success I see in your crispy morsels. Love that deep blue contrast, so delicious to the eye.
Below, just A Bit Of Fluff.

ParticipantThanks Keelin! A zoom telephoto lens that starts in the wide angle focal length range lets me take advantage of the vastness of the Big Sky here in Az. The light in that shot was like right after sunrise plus half an hour or so Hans. It was low angle and I probably color corrected any yellow out of the shot. Another from that shoot.

ParticipantThank you for the kind, good wishes, Hans! Indeed, I felt down to my last feather these past two weeks, and just today am returning to find the forum thriving. And what beauties to come back to! I am savoring all above — the colors, the impossible textures, the keen compositions — all like a breath of fresh air! So thanks to all forum friends, and especially to you and Michael, for the visual tickles which have the feel of feathers resprouting. More soon!

ParticipantThank you Keelin. Nice Ripple.
Some days ago I could capture some very strange asperitas forms. I went out the door to do some shopping and after looking up I went immediately back in to catch my camera. Asperitas passing by! Lots of different ripples. The formation blew over in about a quarter of an hour. I wish it had lasted longer, but it was long enough to capture some of it.

PS: And speaking of mischief… Michael, your formidable eyes on AZ skies and wit are missed! Hoping you’re able to find a solution to the posting glitch soon.

N.B.: I found this word looking for a nice title and I liked it immediately, but it also seems to me a bit archaic (is it?). So just for the taste of the sound (yes that’s possible..).

ParticipantHans, I love the soft swooshiness of your screen cleaners a few posts up. Those clouds were really on the move — and quite a contrast to your Gordian Knot!
The serenity in the images that followed (from both you and Michael) looked to me like the untangling of knottiness. And it left me with quite a yearning for Asperitas, which I’ve not seen in months. That is, until yesterday.
In the late afternoon, the sky took on the telltale tint of fires raging in nearby counties. Mostly burning in the wildlands so far, it’s distant enough to not worry for my own safety, but for others, there is edgy concern. I noticed the smoke-filled clouds had some quality of Asperitas. The sun, low in the sky, doused them with the colors of a summer sunset. While I can appreciate the beauty in the image below, it’s none the less unsettling, knowing what brought them into being.

ParticipantKeelin, yes, I’ve seen too many clouds created by fires below. They get that undulating wisp look as they stretch out over distance. They are one of the few clouds one can taste and smell as well. I see wild fires dotting all over the northern California map, so sorry. I know they are inevitable here in Az, especially as the Monsoon season brings along the lightning.

ParticipantCool blue of overcast asperitas and Arizona Blue to fight the fire of Sunburn Asperitas. Beauty and destructiveness are close. I remember last year the fires were also on the news over here. It must be terrifying. I hope the fires will be under control this year.
The next fire is innocent, being a segment of the the CHA lighting up the cirrus with a fiery glow.

ParticipantFrom what fine (fiery!) feathered friend did you capture this lovely image, Hans? There is the Plain CHAchalaka bird, but its colour is as its name implies. So it must be from a more exquisite flier. Hope you have another sighting!

ParticipantHans, yes,,a before and after set of a wild session. The above shot is before that area of cloud kinda exploded which you see in the cloudscape shot. The below .. was but a herald for the above et al. Its a shot of asperiats with a thin duplicatus undulatus running underneath( i think) In any case it was some mixed up weather severely challenging me to record as much as I could.

ParticipantKeelin, Blooming Blue might be difficult to classify from a cloud point of view but without naming the cloud it has to be classified as beautiful with its very simple but elegant structure.
The fine maze of undulatus duplicatus and the asperitas behind it (right?) gives a very special effect Michael. I can imagine you recorded as much as you could of these intriguing patterns. Here a different view of one of my last Mainstream experiences.

ParticipantHere a colored version of my B&W Wisps. In reality the wisps were hardly visible, just the faint white undulating structure. Editing revealed its hairy look and the curling smoke structure. Unfortunately at the cost of a bit too much noise in the B&W version. The color version is not that noisy but shows less of the curling smoke like wisps. Every advantage has its disadvantage (translated quote from a famous Dutch philosopher).

ParticipantGood question Michael. First of all I like these undulating lines of asperitas, which I still think it is. Here under a picture of a similar situation with a wider view I captured recently on a day the sky was filled with asperitas from which I already posted some of the pictures. Without any context it will make one doubt. In one direction he saperitas is more regular than in a different direction. The question is where to draw the line and how. In the meantime I prefer to answer the question with a yes.
Asperitas Undulatus?
Note: the sries of ictures I took that day recently turned out to be a way too costly series. I took the car to find a better view of the sky and later I got treated with this traffic ticket for something harmless I wasn´t aware of. Aiaiai this is a censored note!

ParticipantYour Standing Ovation is perfectly amazing, Hans! Did you have this one waiting in the wings?! If I were a writer of children’s books, I imagine there’d be plenty of inspiration for stories in the skies, and plenty of cloud images to illustrate the narratives.
There’s no particular story to the photo below, but what I recall is how the softness of these clouds brought me several moments of simple calmness and joy. In a way, i suppose they sort of wrote their own story about how to take a moment and just breathe.

ParticipantJust Taking A Moment is so perfectly titled Keelin. And a beauty. So restful. I just take a moment …..
And thanks. The standing ovation was a bit of luck to find in this applicable case. Your ballerina deserved it. And I must say I have built the last year a bit of an archive where I can look for something that seems to be fitting. Since Alec made such a pace in postings I got also accelerated and never slowed down afterwards. There was a moment in the beginning I thought I could not collect enough, but now it is the other way around. Just fun! As is the weaving of mini-stories.

I must assume you just read the topic on the home page about Skyday and the call for a Sky-ku. Your Perfect Fit is just a perfect fit for this initiative. Perfect title and a perfect applicable haiku. Are you going to tweet it? It is spot on.
I love this kind of appearance of altocumulus (I suppose in the phase of building up) where all the patches just leave some space in between, like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

ParticipantThank you for your kind encouragement, Hans. Love the idea of SkyDay! Alas, I’ll not be able to share any photos for the project as I’ve chosen not to have a twitter account. In fact, CAS’s forum is the only social media exchange I subscribe to. But the idea of Sky-ku is irresistible and I’ll be happy and able to contribute in that way. Will you participate as well?
Your “Also In Three Parts” displays a perfect harmony. I love how all cloud types appear to get along with each other up there. Even when they crash, they rearrange themselves, seemingly without effort, and come out okay.
Can you believe this posting will bring a close to Colour Thread Volume IV? Can’t wait to see what dawns in Volume V!
