After hitting the 101 mark on Vol11  with Keelin’s  wintry blanket  and Han’s Virga allow me to begin Vol12 with , what else, more Pileus. All these Pileus shots were taken from my backyard from July thru August. The first hills rising out of the desert are a few short miles north, and North Mountain is just east . So yea the clouds created trying to get over those hills, visually  aren’t far away. A zoom telephoto lens helps a lot also.

Michael, your pileus offerings are a splendid start for Volume XII, and #124 is like a soft murmuration. Lovely!

Ruth, your Cloud Dance has joyful feel. (And might that be a mermaid with glowing head swimming her way through it?)

And Hans, I love the contrast of smooth and rippled textures and the movement in your image above. I’d like to hear the dream that was dreamt upon it.

I like that shot Keelin. If it were mine, and it isn’t, i’d crop off  80% of the bottom blue. Just a narrow blue strip sends the eye rite to the bird, making the trees a new and necessary part of the photo. Well Done!

Your lacunosus has neat depth to it Hans. The colors are wild too!

And Hans, I think you may also be right about that fallstreak hole—a bird-created portal to who-knows-where. I only hope your Sticky cloud wasn’t waiting on the other side! It has a seductively soft appeal.

Ruth, Yes ,looks to me like you caught a pileus. Remember the physics involved: Quick rising columns of  warm congestus compressing the water out of the atmosphere overhead..making cloud. So, yes all the ingredients are there in the shot. A fun part of pileus spotting is ..how faint is the earliest call that a pileus is forming. That one is the other side, a well developed pileus evolving in to possible velum.

Hans , Yes ,i focused on the lower darker floccus  turning the higher altocum into a soft space filler. One of those  shots where I always see something new when I look at It. In processing, Lightroom has a Clarity tool.  That can really pop clouds out  as well. I use it religiously. Clarity was used on the photo. I generally shot color in added contrast to start with. The end result has me trained to actively seek  these duplicatus opportunities when weather scurries across  Arizona.

      Compliments to everyone.

Michael, looking like a sweet pileus in #170.  They are sneaky.  I can’t find a good word yet for #170.  Guess no words, makes it special.

Ruth, Its just foraging ..and yes , pileus develop and dissipate in about a minute or two. The physics make them sneaky.

Speaking of mammatus, here is the first in a series I took a while ago:

Michael, love the mamma theme.  #173 is my favorite.  Now I understand these guys don’t last very long up there.

Hans and Michael, wow guys.  I can’t keep up.  Hans, may be even a crawling termite.  Michael.  #178 is a fabulous picture, not finding the right words except a lovely splash!
