January 18, 2022 at 4:00 am #519296 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantAfter hitting the 101 mark on Vol11 with Keelin’s wintry blanket and Han’s Virga allow me to begin Vol12 with , what else, more Pileus. All these Pileus shots were taken from my backyard from July thru August. The first hills rising out of the desert are a few short miles north, and North Mountain is just east . So yea the clouds created trying to get over those hills, visually aren’t far away. A zoom telephoto lens helps a lot also. Arizona Color#121

January 26, 2022 at 1:02 am #520439 Patricia L KeelinParticipant Patricia L KeelinParticipantMichael, your pileus offerings are a splendid start for Volume XII, and #124 is like a soft murmuration. Lovely! Ruth, your Cloud Dance has joyful feel. (And might that be a mermaid with glowing head swimming her way through it?) And Hans, I love the contrast of smooth and rippled textures and the movement in your image above. I’d like to hear the dream that was dreamt upon it. An Undecided Wind An Undecided Wind

Michael, your last three are wonderful soft dotted fluffy images. All examples of your favorite duplicatus I suppose? No Decision Made Yet And Far Too Ripply To Sleep Upon
-
February 4, 2022 at 5:49 am #522083 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantThanks Hans and Keelin. Swirling Altcum gives plenty opportunity to produce duplicatus. My favorite is the last duplicatus photo session I had, no matter which kind of cloud i photographed. But they allow for a fun shoot. Here is more. Arizona Color #128

A few days ago, we had similar skies here, and it looked as if a bird had dropped right through the large patch of cirrocumulus. -
February 8, 2022 at 10:15 am #522665 Hans StockerParticipant Hans StockerParticipantThanks Keelin, I love your latest composition. It surely leads the eye into the Great Blue Beyond. Marvelous. The bird that dropped through the layer of clouds seems to have caused a small fallstreak hole, don’t you think? Sticky
-
February 9, 2022 at 4:19 am #522766 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantI like that shot Keelin. If it were mine, and it isn’t, i’d crop off 80% of the bottom blue. Just a narrow blue strip sends the eye rite to the bird, making the trees a new and necessary part of the photo. Well Done! Your lacunosus has neat depth to it Hans. The colors are wild too! Arizona Color#130
-
February 10, 2022 at 1:24 am #522898 Patricia L KeelinParticipant Patricia L KeelinParticipantAh, Michael, I clearly see what you mean! Thank you for the excellent re-cropping suggestion. And Hans, I think you may also be right about that fallstreak hole—a bird-created portal to who-knows-where. I only hope your Sticky cloud wasn’t waiting on the other side! It has a seductively soft appeal. If you’ve ever sneezed into a bowl of powered sugar, this next image might look familiar. Achoooo! Achoooo!

-
March 17, 2022 at 3:28 am #527045 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantI do not believe you have Pileus there Ruth. Velum is what you have, the give away is in the clouds surrounding. Pileus is formed out of thin air. Some Velum below Arizona#139

I am seeing some interesting clouds when I least expect them. Exciting though for me to look at clouds with a better eye for picking out formations, etc. Want To Be
-
April 22, 2022 at 4:53 am #531044 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantRuth, Yes ,looks to me like you caught a pileus. Remember the physics involved: Quick rising columns of warm congestus compressing the water out of the atmosphere overhead..making cloud. So, yes all the ingredients are there in the shot. A fun part of pileus spotting is ..how faint is the earliest call that a pileus is forming. That one is the other side, a well developed pileus evolving in to possible velum. Arizona Color#149

June 16, 2022 at 5:59 am #537161 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantHans , Yes ,i focused on the lower darker floccus turning the higher altocum into a soft space filler. One of those shots where I always see something new when I look at It. In processing, Lightroom has a Clarity tool. That can really pop clouds out as well. I use it religiously. Clarity was used on the photo. I generally shot color in added contrast to start with. The end result has me trained to actively seek these duplicatus opportunities when weather scurries across Arizona. Really !, nice textures there on the cirrus(?) Looks Oriental Arizona Color#164
