ParticipantGreat start to Vol. VIII, Michael– Love the perpendicular angle on this one!
I’ll join you with a colorful little ditty from tonight’s session I’ll just call “Nebula.” With the sun on the horizon behind, a thin spot opened up in the nimbostratus to let enough light through to backlight the fractus in front.

ParticipantAfter a fingernail of moon by Keelin at the end of the former volume, this is a great start for Volume VIII. And a quick start as well. Surprises for sure Michael and Daniel. I try to stay in tune with the atmosphere of Nebula with next one.

ParticipantHey, I wanted to give this one some special attention from last evening— this is the first time I’ve directly observed what appears to be Cirrocumulus Lacunosus.
Is this the right identification do you think? Should I post over in the Identification topic?
I was a bit stunned and a bit giddy at how remarkable the sort of pock-marked texture is– really made me wonder what the wind and temperature up there are doing to create these.
First shot is a crop of the upper-right of the second shot to really show the texture up close. Second shot is the context.
Thoughts?
-
April 30, 2020 at 5:31 am #430511
Michael Lerch
ParticipantDaniel..Yes,correct..lacunosus is created by descending cold air and rising warm air currents..Cold air holds less moisture so cloud is condensed out of it. Warm air holds more moisture so moisture is vaporized back into the atmosphere. Lacunosus shows where the cold descending air is and where the ascending warmer air currents are.

ParticipantThis Color Thread is creating a wonderful tapestry.
Daniel, both Cirrusly Confused and Wisps of Wonder make me smile. Not only are the images lovely, your clever titles also reflect a mind state I can easily relate to.
Hans, in Coming Or Going? it’s hard to tell, but fun to wonder. I suspect this is not a question the clouds ask themselves often. The image makes a fine companion to Flow, which might also ask the same question.
And Michael, amazing diversity you’ve captured in these latest images. I keep falling into the scalloped indentation in #807, while #808 beckons with a surrealscape. And I long to knit something soft and warm with those beautiful strands of wooly cloud in #812.
Below, the late afternoon sun found just the right spot to shine through. A portal of sorts?

ParticipantWhat does this remark about parking meters mean Michael? It seems to come out of the blue. Thinking about it I remembered a favorite cartoon: Guust Flater (very Flanders, Belgium) who has his practical jokes and conflicts about parking meters with the seriously dedicated officer Vondelaar. Here is an example of which I presume I don’t have to translate the words.
I know, this is rather off-topic, so back to Color! I see this mask in #827, Michael. And there is this intriguing Rhapsody In Blue by Ruth!. To quote Keelin I think we share the urge to explore what’s just over the ridge (great title and spotting as well). In my opinion it will be no surprise: more clouds!

ParticipantYou’ve given us a fine riddle, Michael! As Hans noted, it seemed to come (literally!) out of the blue, and had me looking several times at the image with head atilt. Aha! Could it be that arched bit behind the cloud’s ridge that suddenly sparks paredolia? It does, in fact look like the head of a parking meter.
Well, I hope we won’t have to pay per hour if we do park our eyes in the clouds. And I wouldn’t really worry unless this is a sign of things to come. Then again, just yesterday, in the same area of the sky, there appeared something quite similar…
A Mere Meter Matter
Worries aside, I especially like your very scenic Arizona Color #831.
And wow, Ruth, Rhapsody in Blue is music to my eyes. Gorgeous!
And Hans, that cartoon has dreamlike qualities and ja, no translation is needed to decipher its humor. Clarity, aside, I also like Misty.

ParticipantOh ,okay, the parking meter line has to do with signing in to this website. The ” I am not a robot” almost got me on a ,,identify all the pictures with a parking meter”..I was fine until the green one. I had no idea if it was a parking meter or not and only guessed that because no other picture could be the 3rd parking meter,so the green one had to be a parking meter even tho I had never seen one like that. Point being, there are differences between us all and the cultures we exist in..but clouds are clouds, cumulus is cumulus no matter where in the world you see them…the universal of clouds…ok..a joke dissected dies on the operating table.
anyway..

ParticipantWhat’s a cloud-lover to do while waiting out the doldrums of summer’s all-blue skies? This morning, I let my disappointed eyes drift down. They settled with a sigh to rest on a beautiful tree packed with deep green leaves. After a short while, I lifted my eyes to the skies again, and lo and behold, there it was—a big beautiful cumulous cloud! As if my wish alone had conjured it! Alas, all too soon, the bright afterimage of that lovely, dark-leafed tree superimposed upon the blank canvas of sky, dissolved before my very eyes. For a moment though, seeing was believing, and that moment made me smile.

ParticipantA lovely Pastel Painting, Hans. I like the soft feel of it and can enjoy a calm breath just gazing at it. And a wonderful capture, Michael! That one makes me want to hold my breath as if swimming beneath an ice floe. A cool adventure.
For Hans: As for an “affinity…with infinity” ;) … It mist be the allure of the ineffable that holds the appeal for this girl from the north campus. Well, I meant to write must, but there you have it. It’s all in the mist! And what happens in Vagueness might well stay in Vagueness were it not for the clarity and precision of mathematics. Recently, I had to smile (surely a curve of measurable measure?) when a friend mentioned irrational numbers. Just thinking about such concepts as infinity and non-duality, even the magic of the möbius strip (where does one start when there is no end?) tickles my mind with wonder. Mathematics may be a different language, one that I cannot speak or understand, but it holds a beauty all its own. Not unlike an appreciation for clouds. While I don’t know or understand all the science of their making, they tickle my eyes and spirit nonetheless. Likely just another part of the dreamer within.

ParticipantKeelin, thank you for answering so nicely my – maybe cheeky – question about your affinity with infinity. Your wording is a pleasure to read and I had a laugh about your observation of the irrational numbers. Do you know there are also imaginary numbers? And it struck me that you mentioned the Möbius strip. I assume you know the drawing by Escher of the ants on a Möbius strip? When I was at school (ahh, ages ago!) I used to make Möbius strips with paper and glue and then cut them in two (lengthwise). Try it and see what happens.
You are right, beauty does not have to be understood. It just have to be recognized like you explain so well, comparing math with the appreciation of clouds. So let’s keep on tickling the eye and spirit with cloudy surprises as you did with your ingenious ‘On Its Way To Becoming A Möbius Cloud Strip’. Love it!
You wrote “Vagueness might well stay in Vagueness” and maybe next one illustrates that (a bit).

Still outside the evacuation zone here, but air and ash are a potent reminder of what’s too close for comfort. Feeling deeply for those who are nearer to the flames and must be overwhelmed with familiar anxieties.
Another cool comfort is your Wavy Vagueness, Hans—and your fun reply. What?! You say there are also imaginary numbers?! Something like that afterimage cloud I ‘saw’ recently? The idea alone creates a strange sensation in my noggin, like a subtle pressure system building, causing the cloud of a wild thought to form. It just goes to show the mind is as unbound as the sky, creating combinations that baffle and bewilder, illuminate and inspire. And yes, the Escher ants! I believe I’ve seen their loopiness in real life. And oh, the memory (half a century ago!) of möbius notes passed surreptitiously in high school (…they kissed and then…). The repeated curls of Kelvin-Helmholtz come to mind, although, and alas, they fade in no time.
Meanwhile, there is this alway room (and time) for more…

ParticipantRuth, this is surprising. I answered Keelin yesterday and I had not seen yet your ’Light At The End Of The Tunnel’ despite you posted it before my post. Unexpected behavior of the site I suppose. I love it. It has a mysterious abounded feel with these bare tree trunks in the middle.
Michael you captured a lovely lonely little cumulus being sandwiched in Arizona Color #834 (but I prefer the words Keelin used to describe that one).
Keelin, having read your nice and also eloquent answer I am very curious for the clouds that will be caused by a wild thought from you. Maybe I have seen already a lot of examples – like Floating Inspirations – but this seems to promise something …… yes, what? I look forward to it for sure!
Next one is dedicated to memories of good old times.

ParticipantOops, in my reponse to Ruth: … despite must be although .. and abounded (what must that mean?..) must be abandoned. Does that make more sense?

ParticipantHans, I totally understand both versions. Glad you liked my Tunnel. I wanted to tell you the colors you captured in Pastel Painting are my favorite. When looking to paint a wall or for selecting carpet, I have learned to see what color combinations are in bird feathers or flowers. Now I will add sky.
