Michael LerchParticipanthygge,Yes, probably started as a contrail, and then a good wind spread the flames. Global warming right there!Seems a bit odd that the base holds together along the length tho!

ParticipantArtistically (which I feel counts highly for you) a fine picture, I am sure. Technically, you have a good point there about the line holding, MikeL – how long a length was it? Perhaps the longer it was the slower the wind speed up there must have been?
On perspective: I see it as vertical wisps rising; or are the wisps just being blown out sideways? Or perhaps the line is falling? Trails never seem to rise which might imply rapid cooling hence no convection?
Hmm, much ?; or many ?s.

Michael LerchParticipanthygge..2 observations : the length and compact nature of the ” flames” or tendrils tells me the wind has not had a a lot of time to effect the appearance. The phenomena is relatively young. Just a few minutes at most. The other thing noticed is the background mists are variable in orientation. Yes, the linear direction of the contrail is not the same as streams of wind. If memory serves me well..(?)..helped by other pics during same shoot, this is of a short trail. And probably true, the edge of the trail or base, is doing the moving thru space, falling. So the trail is 90 degrees orientated to direction of the winds pushing it.
Yet the phenomena floats, suspended in space and time. Perhaps a moment of a conga line, or fans waiting for the ticket booth to open for the new Star Wars movie.
