July 24, 2018 at 4:41 am #286687 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantHere we go with the 11th thread on B&W Cloud Photographs with around 100 posts each! Thats a lot of pics! I hope folks are enjoying them! Arizona B&W #140
-
July 24, 2018 at 11:50 am #286725 Hans StockerParticipant Hans StockerParticipantI hope so too Michael. Keelin just closed Volume X with “Grown so Attached”. So am I to the addiction of all these and former B&W’s. Do like Keelin did and take a stroll through the wild mix of the 100 images of Vulume X (or earlier Volumes!) before being attached to Volume XI. Wow, almost 1000 B&W’s already ! One capture from the costly mainstream series….. Was it worth it? -
January 27, 2019 at 7:56 pm #327499Ramona Edwards ParticipantOh, love that one, Hans!

-
July 25, 2018 at 7:40 pm #286950 Patricia L KeelinParticipant Patricia L KeelinParticipantThank you, Michael, for a beautiful launch into yet another volume of visual delights! And Hans, need you ask? Yes! Worth it by a long (albeit costly) shot. Perhaps we should have a fund for dedicated cloud spotters who end up paying fines for their fun. I would definitely contribute. As for strolling back in time, the image below reminded me of the sleeping man I shared back in January of this year (Volume VIII). Although this photo was taken only recently, there’s a similarity in pose but with the look of just beginning to wake, one eye opening, and perhaps the remains of a dream about clouds drifting across his forehead. Will he remember it? Awakening Awakening
-
July 26, 2018 at 10:03 am #287028 Hans StockerParticipant Hans StockerParticipantA Fine For Fun! These alliterating nice sounding words make it almost some kind of joy or favor to get. Your kind words do the rest, so no need to raise funds. This is really worth it Keelin. Your Awakening has a lot of magic in it. Love it. Once caught in the thought of it, it keeps my mind busy thinking of what a dark wizard might be up to. He stood up and had to tell the world …
-
July 27, 2018 at 3:43 am #287153 Patricia L KeelinParticipant Patricia L KeelinParticipantThat is one wild wizard there, Hans! And now my mind wonders what mischief he might bring about. And would it require incantation or a simple wave of the wand? -
January 27, 2019 at 7:58 pm #327500Ramona Edwards ParticipantOhhhh, Keelin, I love that photo, too!! Those are high Cirrus clouds, right? I see a lot of those little curlies/loops in clouds here, too. Do they have a name or are they just part of the way clouds change?

Relief. This is where he stood… Further Mischief and Magic prohibited for now.

-
August 17, 2018 at 5:06 am #290850 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantYes Keelin, I played around with opposites when the opportunity struck. A back ground of a light stratus with little dark shreds of cloud being tossed about by the wind looks easy but getting enough contrast for everything to work is difficult. That series of shots probably demonstrates an edge to some of the limitations or parameters of digital photography. Low contrast makes auto focus difficult. True, the manufactures are developing other ways or improved ways to focus digitally than the existing ” contrast between pixels”. But I don’t have the latest technology camera. And if I did, it’d be obsolete in 6months anyway. Talk about harvesting, this Fall Nikon and Canon are supposed to announce their new ” mirrorless full frame” cameras. Can’t Wait! Arizona B&W#156

September 29, 2018 at 7:58 pm #299304 Patricia L KeelinParticipant Patricia L KeelinParticipantWonderful composition and lighting in Arizona B&W#171, Michael. My eye is particularly drawn to the belly of the cloud form with its sense of movement. Well captured! As for typos, no apology needed — I’m in the same boat! Truth is, I often enjoy the side-trips of mis-reading and mis-hearing. Anecdotes of this nature can be quite amusing. My sis once mis-read the word “decapitalization” as “decapitation”. When she caught the error, her first thought was: Oh, where is my head! There’s some parallel here with cloud observations as they morph before our very eyes inspiring us to read and read again just to see what may come to light anew. Could You Repeat That? Could You Repeat That?
-
September 30, 2018 at 7:47 pm #299457 Hans StockerParticipant Hans StockerParticipantSo funny Keelin, this story about decapitation and losing one’s head! A CAPITAL issue, I think. First time I heard of Todd Hido and looking up his work I understand the comparison with #177 (indeed a very fine picture Michael). Todd Hido turns out to have a very special signature and he definitely has a special relationship with everything foggy. Thanks for naming him Keelin. Love to scroll through his portfolio. It inspires. Can’t resist to keep close again

October 18, 2018 at 4:47 am #303491 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantYes,on #177, a curtain of fine cloud . If memory serves me well, the foreground ( foresky) was a thin windblown veil from Virga. The suns rays, crepuscular like, broke through the clouds and illuminated the veil just right. Im not familiar with T Hido’s work so I ‘ll take a look and see what hes up to.. Meanwhile ,, Arizona B&W#178

-
October 22, 2018 at 4:20 am #304421 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantyes, Hido likes the non-descript fog to play with the lighting. Juxtaposing the man made against the fog sets up for unfamiliar realities. Interesting. I like a bit more visual texture. Memories of the cool damp touch of fog have been invoked by Hido’s photos tho. Arizona B&W#179 -
January 27, 2019 at 8:00 pm #327501Ramona Edwards ParticipantMichael, I am watching YouTube videos and learning to identify clouds. Are those Cirrostratus clouds? The ones with lots of little clouds?
-
January 28, 2019 at 12:56 am #327546 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantrje…the pictured above are altocumulus (medium height,6.5kft to 23k ft high) stratiformus ( cloudlets over a large area) perlucidus (space between cloudlets). They are one of my favorite to photograph because they can be both light and dark in the same shot( depending on light and shade) as well as giving a flowing texture. They easily can blend into a undulatus as well. When I see these coming I make sure I have my camera ready.
-
January 29, 2019 at 4:24 am #327730 Michael LerchParticipant Michael LerchParticipantrje..oops, a very recent photo op made me realize a correction is in order…the shot is of altocumulus floccus perlucidus..not stratiformis..They are in groups or patches but not to the extent stratiformis implies. From a distance the cloudlets may appear small enough to indicate a cirrocumulus appellation. Yet when the same patch is near or overhead the cloudlets meet the altocumulus size parameter. Again, visually they are a lot of fun for me.

I am trying to learn to identify clouds and every once in a while I get them correct – but my track record isn’t very good yet! I want to keep trying, even though it will mean lots of mistake, LOL!

January 27, 2019 at 8:06 pm #327503Ramona Edwards ParticipantI was trying to find what I call “Tree Bones” that were similar to the clouds above them. This was about as close as I came! Cirrus clouds, right? Ha – maybe it’s a Cirrus tree, too?!

January 29, 2019 at 4:18 am #327728 Patricia L KeelinParticipant Patricia L KeelinParticipantThank you for kind comments, Ramona. Love your photo of Cirrus clouds and “Cirrus Tree”. I, too, am not confident in identifying cloud types, so hesitate to label. That said, the learning process can be fun and not only lead to better understanding of how formations come to be, but also what to watch for in anticipation of seeing your favorites appear. Meanwhile, for a quick visual guide to the main (as well as other) cloud types, I suggest heading to the CAS Gallery page and click on the photo icon in the top menu (to the left of the login icon). A column will appear on the righthand side of your screen where you can then select links to photo examples. Even better, in my option, would be to purchase either The Cloud Spotter’s Guide or The Cloud Collector’s Handbook (described on the shop page). Both are works of art in themselves with helpful photos and informative descriptions along with Gavin’s classic warm wit.
