      Released today on the BBC’s website are some 12 marvellous photo for the 2017 Astronomy Picture of the Year – 2017.  There are some really nice cloud photos, including a rare Noctilucent – photo #10.

      Thanks for sharing those, Laurence. The NLCs look as if they illuminate the whole scene. I wonder if they can be so bright that objects on the ground cast shadows from their light?

      I think the answer to your query, Noctilucy, is that the photo was taken via a long exposure using a small aperture giving rise to the objects etc casting  shadows over a period of quite small time
