Ruth QuistParticipantHans and Michael, all of your photos are inspiring. Such a fine cloud formation. Do I have an Asperitas?
Wavy Gravy -
January 3, 2021 at 2:22 am #463216
Michael LerchParticipantThanks Ruth. I know what its like to aspire to see a cloud formation that can be rare. For Asperitas the Upside Down perspective usually answers the question. To see cloud disappearing into itself on a upward roll is Asperitas for me. Asperitas is latin for mixed up, stirred, or aerated . Your picture isn’t showing the roll and little mixed. The area in question is too far distant to make a good call. Sorry to disappoint but I can’t give an affirmative. Asperitas is a cloud formation that..when you see it, you will know it. There is no question about it. Asperitas tends to be dramatic. If there is any question a view of it upside down removes all doubt.
Yet here is an example, not a strong example, but it fits the parameters.

 -
January 3, 2021 at 7:51 pm #463292
Ruth QuistParticipantMichael, once again thanks for your assistance. All in the fun and challenge of cloud spotting. I think I may need to do more close up shots of a cloud in question. The upside down is a nice trick. You have a super Asperitas collection. Cloud art.

may be different than what it is.  Always appreciate input. -
January 11, 2021 at 10:20 pm #464765
Hans StockerParticipantVery nice capture Ruth. I prefer to think it is a yes for asperitas and I am open for and curious as well for different opinions.
I often check the gallery when I doubt and to my surprise I found something that looks like what you spotted in the most recent example of asperitas in the gallery: dissipating asperitas.
I suppose you know how to search in the gallery? If not: click on the icon just left from your avatar in the main menu and you will find any cloud type, phenomenon, etc. to select (more than one criterion can be chosen) and you will find your selection. Nice way to look for more rare phenomena or combinations btw.
 -
January 11, 2021 at 11:01 pm #464768
Ruth QuistParticipantHans, thanks for your input. I am going to call my cloud The Ribbon Dancer. Oh, I was a ballet dancer in my younger years.
 -
January 12, 2021 at 3:49 am #464796
Michael LerchParticipantRuth, Yes ,Han’s link is good proof. While we’re on the subject, below is a shot of ‘dissipating asperitas”. If I had a camera on it about 10 to 15 minutes earlier it would have been just “asperitas”, though one never knows how qickly the winds that create asperitas, will destroy it.

Hans StockerParticipantRuth, am I mistaking or do I recognize some doubt in your words about your last one? To me it is a yes and to me it also seems to be an eyebrow cloud. In my opinion closely related to asperitas. Superciliaris as it is named unofficially. Might be another quest for Gavin to get it in the ICA? By chance I spotted some of it on a second consecutive day with asperitas. Any opinions?

 -
May 10, 2021 at 8:04 pm #485321

 -
May 13, 2021 at 7:31 pm #485760
Ruth QuistParticipantHans, you are correct in my doubting of an Asperitas sighting. Your thought of an eyebrow cloud seems right on. So enjoyed your gallery selection that was displayed this week. Big eyebrows
and may be a big bird.  I do need more Asperitas practice.  It is a tough one for me.  All in good time I hope.  I will throw another cloud grouping out there to see your thoughts.  This was a calm morning facing south. -
