On St David’s Day Croeso/Welcome to the clouds spotted above Wales, UK. From Dragon’s Breath in the valleys to Lenticularis over Llangollen, all are welcome 😊
-
March 1, 2023 at 9:39 am #566598Angela SwanParticipant
Fabulous to see a Welsh thread, Happy St David’s Day! These were on 9th Feb, Dragon’s Breath with fluctus curling up like tongues, and some stunning cumulus catching the morning sun. Between Abergavenny and Monmouth.

-
March 1, 2023 at 12:04 pm #566614Angela SwanParticipant
I can’t find a “like” button anywhere! But like it I do… gorgeous colours and that that bit of lenticularis floating across the Big Top.. 😊
-
March 1, 2023 at 4:53 pm #566633Angela SwanParticipant
So excited to see this.. my first ever horseshoe vortex!! Just a few minutes ago.
-
March 10, 2023 at 8:20 pm #567355Angela SwanParticipant
So good to see some sky again today, after all the grey and fog of the last few days. Stopped on the way home from Abergavenny to snap this wild dramatic edge of cloud catching the evening sun, and some lovely cirrus flying free beyond.
-
March 12, 2023 at 9:33 pm #567549Pamela StevensParticipant
Beautiful 😊
-
March 27, 2023 at 6:46 pm #568669Angela SwanParticipant
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Some clouds at last! In Abergavenny this afternoon, lovely cirrus and cumulus mixed sky. And this evening at home.. a few leaping sky animals! </p>
-
March 28, 2023 at 7:50 am #568712Pamela StevensParticipant
Once the dense cloud cover lifts, there’s always such a variety of clouds to enjoy in your part of Wales Angela. The streaky fibratus woosh across, love them :)
-

A cirrocumulus feather tickling the sky above Hawarden, Flintshire spotted yesterday 27th March 2023
-
March 28, 2023 at 3:55 pm #568737Angela SwanParticipant
<p style=”text-align: left;”>What a gorgeous depth of blue you had to contrast the lovely feather and cumulus! 😊</p>
-
March 28, 2023 at 4:03 pm #568738Angela SwanParticipant
Back to grey today, apart from this unusually low-slung rainbow. It hung around for ages… 40 mins between the 1st and 2nd pic ( assuming they upload the right way round!)
-
March 29, 2023 at 12:39 pm #568854Pamela StevensParticipant
Thanks for your comment Angela 🙂

I love this Welsh corner on the Forum. Please keep it alive. So sad that the groups don’t exist anymore. Advantage s that anyone can comment not restricted to membership of a group.
Great lowbows btw!-
March 28, 2023 at 11:21 pm #568795Angela SwanParticipant
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Thanks so much Hans, a most welcome visitor to our Welsh corner of the Big Sky! Agree it’s really sad about the groups but so happy when Pamela found this place to carry on sharing. And thanks for the lowdown on lowbows.. I wondered if it had a proper name and that fits the bill alright!</p>

March 29, 2023 at 1:13 pm #568856Pamela StevensParticipant
Delighted to know you’ve checked out our patch Hans 🙂Thanks for your interest and supportive comment and like Angela says lowbows is a great term 🙂 slinking across the valleys like wolves/ lobos…

April 7, 2023 at 10:25 am #569693Angela SwanParticipant
I have tried to upload some pics from yesterday but it’s failed 3 times, despite seeming to have uploaded ok! So am going to try again individually.. 🤞 this will work…
-
April 7, 2023 at 10:29 am #569694Angela SwanParticipant
Yesterday in Monmouthshire, huge skies full of cumulus with some very heavy showers. Check out this downpour coming from what looks like burst mammatus..? (Taken from a moving car, so a bit of windscreen reflection too.)
-
April 7, 2023 at 10:33 am #569695Angela SwanParticipant
Lovely big sky full of cumulus and some lenticularis too
-
April 7, 2023 at 10:37 am #569696Angela SwanParticipant
An anvil forming here, with a strange little dark caterpillar cloud in front.
And a pileus perhaps, or maybe just a lenticular cloud playing hide-and-seek with a cumulus 🌥
-
April 7, 2023 at 3:38 pm #569713Angela SwanParticipant
Apparently it’s a good day for those folk who like throwing themselves off hillsides. Zoom in to spot them.. above the Blorenge which overlooks Abergavenny. (Bear in mind for when you need something to rhyme with orange 😆). Happy Easter Friday 🌥
-
April 10, 2023 at 8:11 pm #570004Angela SwanParticipant
Super excited to see these amazing mammatus after a hailstorm this evening! Over Abergavenny.
-
April 13, 2023 at 10:23 am #570227Pamela StevensParticipant
That little caterpillar is eye catching but the mammatus takes the biscuit if not the whole packet. An excellent array of clouds over Monmouthshire this Easter, well spotted Angela. Flintshire skies have been dominated by galloping cumulus mostly, must do better…..
-
April 22, 2023 at 12:15 pm #570835Angela SwanParticipant
😆 thanks for your brilliant comment above, Pam!
Nothing show-stopping here, just a round-up of a few pics from last week. These were on the 13th. All taken here at home near Abergavenny.
-
April 22, 2023 at 12:58 pm #570839Angela SwanParticipant
These were on the 14th April, an unexpectedly lovely sunset after a showery day. (Uploaded out of order.. the rainbow was earlier of course).
-
April 22, 2023 at 1:02 pm #570840Angela SwanParticipant
On the 15th.. this lovely pattern caught my eye while gardening.
-
April 22, 2023 at 1:05 pm #570841Angela SwanParticipant
A misty start to the morning. Hope some good clouds come your way this weekend! 😊
-
April 23, 2023 at 7:59 am #570913Pamela StevensParticipant
- The sunset and the shot of the cloudy fingerprint are poetic. The last misty shot is so evocative of that gentle stillness you suddenly experience in the countryside is beautiful. The horses make it. I’d happily hang that on my living room wall.
-
April 23, 2023 at 9:34 am #570915Angela SwanParticipant
Ah thanks Pam, for such a lovely comment. It was a beautiful sight as I looked out yesterday.. had to open my bedroom window very quietly not to startle the horses, they looked so tranquil and perfectly posed.. as you say, one of those special moments.
-
April 30, 2023 at 6:39 pm #571792Angela SwanParticipant
The Dragon’s Breath gathering yesterday morning, taken just before 5am. The second pic was at 7am. Pity I missed 6am.. bet it was pretty! (They’ve uploaded in reverse order!) 🙃
-
May 4, 2023 at 9:16 pm #572185Angela SwanParticipant
It was a warm sunny morning in Monmouth today, with a bit of cirrostratus and cirrus about, so it was huge surprise to come out of the supermarket and see these… mammatus.. surely..?! Heavy rain later of course.
-
May 14, 2023 at 7:34 pm #573040Angela SwanParticipant
Asperitas this afternoon! These were taken over the space of about half an hour. I’ll try to upload in 2 posts, tried earlier but they failed at the ‘submit’ stage.. so 🤞this time..
-
May 14, 2023 at 7:40 pm #573041Angela SwanParticipant
And the rest!
Spot the ghostly fish swimming under those choppy waves on the 3rd photo (which was actually the last one taken) 😊
-
May 17, 2023 at 12:53 pm #573266Pamela StevensParticipant
-
<li style=”text-align: left;”>I see the little fish! Some great shots here Angela. Asperitas, mammatus and those lovely Dragon’s Breath ones. Am hoping to post some coastal cloud shots over the next week, fingers crossed.
-
May 19, 2023 at 10:13 am #573402Angela SwanParticipant
Thanks Pam, we’ve been rather lucky for clouds down here in the South lately 😊
Hope you get some good cloudscapes on your coastal break.. looking forward to seeing some photos!

A cumulus sporting its natty pileus sun hat on this lovely warm day in Abergavenny 🌤
-
May 23, 2023 at 9:15 pm #573849Angela SwanParticipant
Such a pretty sky just now. High cirrus in a beautiful shell-like swirl & altocumulus catching the setting sunlight. Magical.
-
May 26, 2023 at 6:10 pm #574098Pamela StevensParticipant
😊 the cloud has got its hat on…and the pearls of sunset shine. All I have to share is a flagpole mistaken for a contrail….
-
May 26, 2023 at 9:37 pm #574109Angela SwanParticipant
Aww no..! Well here’s wishing you skies full of gorgeousness over the Bank Holiday weekend, Pam! 😊🌤
-
-
June 12, 2023 at 3:09 pm #575373Angela SwanParticipant
This was yesterday evening and taken over the space of just 18 minutes. I noticed some building cumulus with ribbons of pileus on top. They bloomed so fast but were soon obscured by a lower dark layer which became a bit asperitas-y, lovely! But none of the much-needed rain!
Will upload in 2 batches and 🤞they upload in the right order!
-
June 12, 2023 at 3:12 pm #575374Angela SwanParticipant
-
June 12, 2023 at 7:59 pm #575399Angela SwanParticipant
This afternoon I stopped on the way to Abergavenny to take a quick pic of this lovely curtain of rainfall. A bit later, on coming out of the supermarket, great cumulus towered above the town. Both photos feature The Blorenge, proudly known locally as “the mountain”. And speaking of which I absolutely cannot resist also uploading this meme..! 😆
-
June 14, 2023 at 9:18 pm #575537Angela SwanParticipant
I’m guessing this busy streaky sky is mostly down to contrails in varying degrees of wear.. a nice contrail shadow in the middle too. And these nice cirrus overhead.. not quite sure what the flying creature is… ice Dragon, perhaps!
-
June 15, 2023 at 8:19 am #575566Pamela StevensParticipant
Terrific cloud shots, so much going on above and near Abergavenny. Changing moods, shapes, colours. I love your description of clouds blooming, like roses. Wish I could upload local skies via my phone but the site just won’t let me. It used to, when we were in the lockdown Wales group, but no longer. Can only upload via my laptop so the spontaneous phone capture/share to CAS has vanished, like Dragon’s Breath🤔
-
June 17, 2023 at 4:47 pm #575719Angela SwanParticipant
Thanks for your comment, Pam. But what a nuisance you can’t upload images direct from your phone, frustrating – I wonder why. This thread function of the CAS site does behave very differently to our good old Wales group but I can upload from my (Samsung) phone – the process is often a bit clunky (images often failing to upload & need to try a few times) but I get there in the end! I wonder if your local phone shop geeks may be able to help resolve the problem. Or if you have email on your phone you could email the images to yourself, so that they get sent to your laptop.. at least that would be quicker/easier than doing a whole photo download each time! Would be great if you can find a workaround as I miss seeing your skies!
-
-
June 20, 2023 at 6:25 pm #575999Angela SwanParticipant
Yesterday early evening.. lenticularis and a tiny red dot which was a Virgin hot air balloon. And later, a lovely patch of undulatus at sunset time.. (uploaded out of order!).
-
June 20, 2023 at 6:30 pm #576000Angela SwanParticipant
I’ve had this phone for several years and only recently discovered the wide angle function! Used it today to capture this glorious giant looming over Abergavenny. Great, I thought, more lovely rain on the way. But looks can be deceiving.. not a drop!
-
June 20, 2023 at 7:26 pm #576001Pamela StevensParticipant
Wow that wide angle shot is so dramatic! The evening shots are beautiful too. Will try what you suggest Angela. Thanks 🙂
-
June 22, 2023 at 11:10 am #576123Angela SwanParticipant
Thanks Pam 😊 And hope you find a solution to get your photos online with relative ease again! 🌤

-
July 18, 2023 at 7:15 am #578033Angela SwanParticipant
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Just tried uploading some pics from yesterday which have once again disappeared into thin air at the “submit” stage. So will try uploading one by one, in case attempting 5 at once causes the thing to crash.</p>
Yesterday morning, a lovely altocumulus/lenticular mix. With visibly playful shearing winds. Taken over the space of 5 minutes. -

-
July 18, 2023 at 7:25 am #578037Angela SwanParticipant
Cat-snail dissolving back to a blob, with pretty shirred edges. And a more conventiomal lenticular cloud forming down to the right.
At least these have uploaded this time, but a bit clunky having to do them sepatately 😊
-
August 8, 2023 at 10:20 am #580057Angela SwanParticipant
Late uploading this.. it was on 21st July, in the evening – a nice little bit of fluctus. Took 4 pics but this first one is the best – it had gone in about a minute.
-
August 9, 2023 at 9:41 am #580127Angela SwanParticipant
I happened to look out at 5.47 this morning and this lovely sight woke me right up! A thick blanket of Dragon’s Breath, with some lenticularis above.. and across the way.. a Sun pillar!
Looks like only one pic has uploaded so will try below for the other two 🤞

August 9, 2023 at 9:49 am #580130Angela SwanParticipant
Strictly one at a time then, we get there in the end! Does all look rather Autumnal though.. already..
-
August 13, 2023 at 9:55 am #580512Angela SwanParticipant
Cheekily pulled in at a bus stop for a quick pic of this lowbow, on the way to Abergavenny yesterday.
-
August 28, 2023 at 7:49 am #581607Angela SwanParticipant
A few minutes before sunrise on the 24th, night rolling back to reveal the Dragon’s breath lining the valley.
-
August 28, 2023 at 7:51 am #581608Angela SwanParticipant
I wonder what this odd couple found so amusing! A couple of days ago.
-
August 28, 2023 at 7:53 am #581609Angela SwanParticipant
Another Dragon’s Breath morning. It really is beginning to feel a lot like Autumn…
-
September 22, 2023 at 2:09 pm #583947Angela SwanParticipant
I’ve taken heaps of cloud photos on holiday recently & for Cloud Appreciation Day. But uploading multiple images on here is too laborious.. so here’s just one from yesterday. I was happily a passenger at the time so was able to catch this lovely bit of evening mixed sky with crepuscular rays for that bit of extra drama.
-
September 27, 2023 at 4:55 am #584318Pamela StevensParticipant
Lovely recent photos 😊 I hope you enjoyed your holiday Angela.
-
September 28, 2023 at 12:58 pm #584425Angela SwanParticipant
Thank you Pam 😊 yes, we had a lovely time. A pity our planned meeting didn’t work out… another time we hope! 🤞😊
-
-
September 28, 2023 at 1:09 pm #584426Angela SwanParticipant
Was happily surprised by these asperitas yesterday afternoon. May have been something to do with Storm Agnes.. it got quite blowy later on but not much rain. Taken above my local garage, where I was having my tyres pumped up. The mechanic looked at me like I was a poor old dear who’d lost her marbles when I told him these clouds were a rare sight!
-
November 9, 2023 at 3:18 pm #588473Angela SwanParticipant
Amazing to see these fantastic mamma clouds earlier today, while driving home from Usk. Pulling over to admire them at leisure was an absolute must! Most of the pics are taken wide angle as the “pouches” were so big & covered a wide area of sky. Fabulous sight to see! 🤩 Will upload pics singly, hopefully they will upload that way as already failed twice.. 🤞

<p style=”text-align: left;”>At last! Fluctus sawing across the wildly, windy sky over Buckley, Flintshire. A rare and fleeting formation I was lucky to see. Photo taken at about 2.30pm Tues 16th January 2024.</p>
-
March 1, 2024 at 9:54 am #598691Pamela StevensParticipant
Happy St David’s Day 😊 A year since launching this thread and greetings to any who call in! Today in north Wales it’s wet, gloomy and grey with a forecast for snow on the mountains later. The cloud cover where I am isn’t photogenic but part of the tapestry of the year so I’ll take a snap to add to our run. Greetings to fellow cloud lovers wherever you are. Diolch 😊

And Happy St David’s Day from South Wales! 🏴😊 We have big cumulus rolling across on a fast cold wind here. This dramatic shower was quite likely sleety as we just had some here.. mixed with some sunshine! 🌦
