The London skyline emerges through luminous layers of cloud and mist in this artwork painted at the turn of the twentieth century by Claude Monet. The artist created no fewer than 19 paintings of the Palace of Westminster between 1900 and 1905, always working from the same vantage point across the River Thames. He depicted the same scene at different times of day and in varying atmospheric conditions. The architectural detail was never the focus. Monet was fascinated by the changing interactions between light, fog, and cloud.
Houses of Parliament, London (1900-01) by Claude Monet is in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, US.
