The island of Maui in the Hawaiian archipelago gets its name from the legend of Hawaiʻiloa, the navigator credited with discovering Hawaiʻi. According to this legend, Hawaiʻiloa named the island after his son, who in turn was named after the Polynesian folk hero Māui. Among his numerous exploits, Māui stole fire for humans from the underworld and captured the Sun to lengthen the days. If this Polynesian sunset of Altocumulus, Stratocumulus, Cumulonimbus, mamma, and Altostratus is anything to go by, he may also have had a knack for adorning skies with legendary clouds.
