One fine spring day, Sabine Guntau (Member 47,752) spotted an out-of-season snowball over the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It is an example of the humilis species of Cumulus cloud. The Latin word humilis means ‘of small size’. The large patch of high cloud beyond is Cirrus spissatus, a dense-looking form of Cirrus that is named with the Latin for ‘thickened’. Since high clouds like this are composed of ice crystals, we might think of the Cirrus spissatus as a field of snow to accompany Sabine’s unseasonable snowball.
