Tuesday 3rd February 2026

Hamza, the son of Mark Howard (Member 24,957), spotted this Cumulus fractus glowing red in the evening sun before a backdrop of Stratocumulus over Algeciras, Andalusia, Spain. We add the term fractus to a Cumulus cloud when it has a broken or torn appearance. The curious shape of this one suggests that it may have started life as water vapour rising from a nearby cooling tower. If this was indeed the case, we’d also add the term homogenitus – for a cloud that formed as a result of human activity. Mark had a simpler name for it: ‘I call it “Angry Elephant”.’
