When you look down onto clouds with the Sun directly behind you, there’s a chance you might see a glory. This optical effect appears as concentric rings of colour surrounding your shadow cast onto the cloud below. It is the result of the reflection, refraction, and diffraction of sunlight by the tiny droplets in the cloud. João Pedro Costa (Member 18,483) spotted this glory in a layer of Stratus over Cape St. Vincent, Algarve, Portugal. Well, it wasn’t quite João who spotted it. This view down onto the coastal clouds from such a high vantage was actually spotted by João’s drone. This explains why the glory’s coloured rings appear here without the accompanying shadow usually seen in the middle. The drone was too small to cast a shadow over a distance like this.
