Julie Raymond-Yakoubian (Member 24422) was in touch to tell us about an article from the journal, Geophysical Research Letters which outlines recent research by scientists at the University of Utah showing how air pollution in the Northern Hemisphere can find its way to the Arctic and affect cloud formation there. Since some clouds can have a warming effect on ground temperatures, any changes to cloud formation over the poles could have significant environmental impacts.
The research team found that clouds in the Arctic were between two and eight times more sensitive to air pollution than those at other latitudes.
