    Thanks for your interesting comments I live in the vale of Neath S. Wales and have never seen “Cranes” visit we have a large heron colony close by
    so my guess was that they were herons and indeed I have not seen that many “herons” in flight
    again many thanks for what could well be a true explanation

    The birds depicted here are most probably Cranes. To see so many Herons like this in formation?!? I’d guess not.

    wondeful sight… Bur, sorry, these birds are not herons. Herons bend their neck when flying. These probably are cranes.

From what is visible in this mysterious photograph, it appears to be a unique Stratocumulus formation that produced a type of linear convergence across the sky over Upstate New York, US. Without a 360 view, it is not entirely clear as to what may have 'precipitated' it.
