Lorraine Anderson (Member 41,841) spotted this extensive display of Altocumulus lenticularis clouds over Montrose, Angus, Scotland. Shaped by strong airflows moving over uneven terrain – in this case, the south-eastern Scottish Highlands – lenticular clouds are smooth, often layered structures that appear sculpted into the sky.
At sunset, the clouds glow in bands of copper, rose, and violet, their sweeping curves accentuated by the glancing angle of the light. Since the rising and dipping airflows that formed Lorraine’s lenticularis clouds resulted from the undulating terrain, you could consider this a skyscape inspired by the landscape out of view below.
