Sheryl Garrison (Member 51,711) had just hiked up to a viewpoint in the Grizzly country of Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada when she witnessed cloud cascading down the slope of Chapman Peak like a huge waterfall.
Orographic Stratus clouds are a form of Stratus that develop as air flows up and over raised terrain. The air cools as it rises, its moisture condensing into a uniform layer of cloud that floods the raised terrain like an inundation, producing perhaps a light drizzle as it flows. From her lofty vantage point, Sheryl watched as the waterfall of cloud tumbled down the leeward slopes, evaporating again in the warming air below. Before long, the whole spectacle had dispersed in the sun – a fleeting moment of cloud flow that was well worth the climb.
