Alan, I’ve just come across an interesting video (2.45 minutes duration) taken from NASA’s Astronomy Picture Of the Day (APOD) website showing a very rare combination of Noctilucent clouds accompanied by Aurorae on the night of 4th & 5th August recent at Caithness, Scotland:-

Certainly worth watching! The text is informative too.

Would the faint streak seen one third of the way in of the left hand side of the photo possibly be the Comet PANSTARRS – a comet which has certainly got the interest recently of the astronomical community?

  3. Sharon says:

    That is one strange contrail.

  4. bryan says:

    Awesome capture Alan.

  5. Mark McCaughrean says:

Sorry, typo there: Alan, not Alana :-)

  6. Mark McCaughrean says:

Very interesting indeed, Alana, as it shows the Crow Instability in action again; see the picture I submitted here a little while ago:

But all the more amazing, since I took another picture of this phenomenon last weekend that’s almost identical to yours in showing this “barbed wire” appearance:

    Good stuff :-)

  7. Kiran says:

    Great detail in the contrail!

Oops – I somehow managed to tag my comment onto the wrong cloud – don't ask me how!
What I wanted to say about THIS one was that it looks like coloured pastels on a grey card, very unusual. Love it!

  2. Sharon says:

I would like to think it is an omen of peace also but "gruesome looking severed hand" seems more likely.

  3. Anthony Skellern says:

    Stunning image, Norman.
