What’s the perfect music to listen to as you kick back and watch the clouds drift by? These tracks were suggestions by our members. If you’ve got a suggestion for music to watch clouds by – or you’ve created some yourself – let us know and we’ll post it here.
Jill Willder, Member 35,562, reminded us of the wonderful Kitty MacFarlane’s song ‘Namer of Clouds’. It’s also prompted us to remember that Kitty interviewed Gavin Pretor-Pinney, Member 001, about clouds for BBC Radio 4’s “Open Country” programme in December 2020.
Mary Williamson, Member 54,343, found this video where the lyrics to Mr Blue Sky have been turned into AI cloud art. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Multi-award winning Australian Pianist, Matthew Sheens, is set to release his latest Album Cloud Appreciation Day this month.
Addy Linz, Member 64,475 suggested “Marvellous Clouds” by Cosmo Sheldrake, a UK-based composer, producer and live improviser. Running through all his work is a belief that the living world is a noisy and musical place with the power to change how we think, feel, and imagine.

This is an original composition sent in my Laurianne Fiorentino who wrote “Assembled from photos cloud and video files I have taken in New Mexico, USA, and from a plane. The music is an improvisation between Michael Kott (cello) and I (flute), captured impromptu in Nashville. I’d love to hear your comments!”

Magnus Buder from Sweden heard about the Cloud Appreciation Society on Swedish public radio. He recently wrote this piece of music and feels it will be perfect to listen to whilst watching clouds.
Suggested by Society member, John Freeman, Altocumulus by Kevin Kindle is a relaxing, meditative piece ideal to listen to whilst gazing lazily as the clouds drift by.

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theater’ which he curates. Each week he features a new movie and told about this one –
Inspiration4 was the first all-civilian mission to orbit Earth, resulting in these powerful photographs by Chris Sembroski who served as humanity’s eyes. The video was captured by astronaut Matthew Dominick from the ISS during Expedition 72. Earth’s images are set to music composed and performed by Hiroshi Ebina, a Japanese sound artist creating electronic/ambient music.

From the Earth Movie Theatre, this is Jazz Clouds Day, by Steve Thomas’ Folktales and Fusions. Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 and Education Mission Specialist at the Association of Space Explorers introduced us to the ‘Earth Movie Theatre’ and we are thoroughly enjoying the music of world-class musicians combined with ISS movies of Earth.
The Incredible String Band- Little Cloud is taken from The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion 1967 and was suggested by Society member, Helen Glazer.
Cloud enthusiast Dora Drake, shared ‘In the Clouds’ an album by Michele Ippolito. Its relaxing ‘atmospheric’ music is great to listen to whilst watching clouds.
Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theater’ of which he is the curator. He told about this one, “As we fly over Earth, clouds provide beauty, harmony, drama, and reveal Earth’s stories. From orbit, even night clouds offer their intrigues, as in this flight, with clouds dancing over Europe at night“.
This music is performed by Steve Thomas featuring the vocals of Patty Barkas.
“Air Liquide” are German electronic music producers. This is a track from their album “Nephology” (the study of clouds) called “If There Was No Gravity”. It was suggested to us by cloud enthusiast Elias Brandorff.
Cloud Appreciation Society member, Tim Burgess, suggested this song by Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Casey Clapp, Member 62,659 has suggested “How Sweet to be a Cloud ” by a group called “The United States of America” for our Music to Watch Clouds by section.
Hoagy Carmichael composed this song in 1946.
Suzanne Winckler, member 41844, suggests we watch clouds whilst listening to “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” by Willie Nelson.
Jason Weir recently proposed this piece for the Music to Watch Clouds by page. He wrote, “Imagine you are an eagle flying high above the mountains, soaring between layers of cloud, one moment your vision obscured by gentle droplets, the next catching a glimpse of the vast upper atmosphere with its deepening blue hues…”
The Sam Handwich Band heard about us on the New York Times “The Daily” podcast. They told us they were amazed that something like our Society exists and wanted to share their music video with us, because it’s full of wonderful cloud images!

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theater’ which he curates. Each week he features a new movie and in this one, astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, shows the scene from ISS Expedition 69 on August 20, 2023, beginning with sunrise over the Atlantic clouds, then on to Europe, Saudi Arabia and dusk over the Indian Ocean. The movie is set to the inspiring music of the choral group Seraphim and composer Timothy C. Takach, recorded live in Chestnut Hill, MA. Recorded on 08/20/2023.

As part of the Earth Serenade series, this music is by Dwayne Haggins & Friends accompanying beautiful images of Earth taken by the crew of ISS 65. The song “I Get Sad” evokes honest emotions as we watch the dancing aurora and night clouds. “Where it Wants” follows rivers, mountains and a hurricane.
