Category: Cloud Music

What’s the perfect music to listen to as you kick back and watch the clouds drift by? These tracks were suggestions by our members. If you’ve got a suggestion for music to watch clouds by – or you’ve created some yourself – let us know and we’ll post it here.

Mike Oldfield – Far Above the Clouds

“Far Above the Clouds” – Tubular Bells III – Mike Oldfield, was suggested by Society member, Clare P.

She wrote “Awesome track. I recently gave a small talk on clouds and this was one of half a dozen cloud tracks in the soundtrack for the group work”.

“Marvellous Clouds” by Cosmo Sheldrake

Addy Linz, Member 64,475 suggested “Marvellous Clouds” by Cosmo Sheldrake, a UK-based composer, producer and live improviser.  Running through all his work is a belief that the living world is a noisy and musical place with the power to change how we think, feel, and imagine.

Laurianne Fiorentino – A Long Smoke

This is an original composition sent in my Laurianne Fiorentino who wrote “Assembled from photos cloud and video files I have taken in New Mexico, USA, and from a plane. The music is an improvisation between Michael Kott (cello) and I (flute), captured impromptu in Nashville. I’d love to hear your comments!”

Kym “Bid” Bidstrup – Sunlight on Water

An original piece by Kym “Bid” Bidstrup who says it inspired by the exquisite duck pond in Barnes, London, UK, a magnificent place to spend time lost or found – or both – in thought.
This is the Extended Version.
In this version you might hear some frog noises, an extra ripple or two, a dragonfly that I’m especially proud of creating musically, and, well, whatever duck imaginings you can conjure.

Journey to the Clouds

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theater’ which he curates. Each week he features a new movie and told about this one –

Inspiration4 was the first all-civilian mission to orbit Earth, resulting in these powerful photographs by Chris Sembroski who served as humanity’s eyes. The video was captured by astronaut Matthew Dominick from the ISS during Expedition 72. Earth’s images are set to music composed and performed by Hiroshi Ebina, a Japanese sound artist creating electronic/ambient music.

Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now

Suggested by Helen Glazer – Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. The lyrics say it all…

“Bows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It’s cloud illusions I recall I really don’t know clouds at all”

Jazz Clouds Day

From the Earth Movie Theatre, this is Jazz Clouds Day, by Steve Thomas’ Folktales and Fusions. Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 and  Education Mission Specialist at the Association of Space Explorers introduced us to the ‘Earth Movie Theatre’ and we are thoroughly enjoying the music of world-class musicians combined with ISS movies of Earth.

In the Clouds

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theater’ of which he is the curator. He told about this one, “As we fly over Earth, clouds provide beauty, harmony, drama, and reveal Earth’s stories.  From orbit, even night clouds offer their intrigues, as in this flight, with clouds dancing over Europe at night“.

This music is performed by Steve Thomas featuring the vocals of Patty Barkas.

Harmonielehre: III. Meister Eckhardt and Quackie

Jason Weir recently proposed this piece for the Music to Watch Clouds by page. He wrote, “Imagine you are an eagle flying high above the mountains, soaring between layers of cloud, one moment your vision obscured by gentle droplets, the next catching a glimpse of the vast upper atmosphere with its deepening blue hues…”

“GND Lift” by Sam Handwich

The Sam Handwich Band heard about us on the New York Times “The Daily” podcast. They told us they were amazed that something like our Society exists and wanted to share their music video with us, because it’s full of wonderful cloud images!

Fluffy Clouds

Mike Midlo, a muscian sent us the link to a song he wrote a few years ago saying “I thought it might take you up there for a ride in the autumnal cumulonimbus”. The song can be found on his record “MidLo: Tow Steps & Waltzes”

Earth – Only Here

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theater’ which he curates. Each week he features a new movie and in this one, astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, shows the scene from ISS Expedition 69 on August 20, 2023, beginning with sunrise over the Atlantic clouds, then on to Europe, Saudi Arabia and dusk over the Indian Ocean. The movie is set to the inspiring music of the choral group Seraphim and composer Timothy C. Takach, recorded live in Chestnut Hill, MA. Recorded on 08/20/2023.
