FAQs: Sky Gathering on Lundy Island

The Cloud Appreciation Society is hosting our 2019 Sky Gathering from 16th to 22nd May 2019 on the tiny island of Lundy, just off the Devon coast in the southwest of England.

Here are answers to some questions you may have about the trip. If you need to know something not answered here, email us at

Frequently Asked Questions

When is it happening?

Starts: Thursday 16th May 2019 in London, England.
Ends: Wednesday 22nd May 2019 in Exeter, England.

Guests who are camping (see below) will have a part itinerary. Their trip will begin on the morning of Saturday 18th May 2019 at the harbour in Ilfracombe, Devon, England, where it will also end on the evening of Tuesday 21st May 2019.

Where will it take place?

The gathering will take place on the Island of Lundy, which is off the coast of Devon in southwest England. Our group will meet and stay on the first night in London and then travel together to Devon, where we’ll stay for the next night before we take a ferry over to the island. Just 3 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, Lundy is a tiny granite outcrop in the middle of the Bristol Channel. It is rich in wildlife, with clean air, ever varied weather and a colourful history of shipwrecks, pirates and eccentric owners. After spending three nights on the island, we will return for our last night on the mainland in/near the Devon city of Exeter, from where guests will depart the next morning.

(Guests who choose the option of camping on Lundy will only be joining us for a Part Itinerary, starting with boarding the ferry on the mainland and ending with disembarking the ferry back on the mainland.)

What is a ‘Sky Gathering’?

This trip will be a gathering of members of the Cloud Appreciation Society, along with any family and friends they wish to bring, from around the world. We will be entertained and stimulated by expert speakers who will tell us about the science, art and culture of the sky with fascinating illustrated talks. We will also be able to engage in a range of individual and group activities to encourage us to explore our relationship with the sky. And we will learn about the wildlife and the history of our location, the island of Lundy. We have not confirmed the speakers yet, but we know that the talks will be entertaining, informative and stimulating for anyone interested in the sky.

How much will it cost?

If I am travelling alone, can I be matched up with another guest of the same gender?

Yes, if you would like to be paired up with another guest of the same gender to share a Double property with twin beds on the island and a twin hotel room on the mainland, just let the booking adviser know that you would like this. We will endeavour to find a guest of the same gender for you to share with. Our booking agent will get back in touch once we have been able to pair you with another guest, at which point they will be able to take your deposit and make the booking.

If I'm camping, will I need to stay on the mainland before and after we meet?

Camping guests should consider arranging a place to say on the mainland before and after our time on Lundy because we will be meeting at the harbour in Ilfracombe at 9.00am on Saturday 18th May and we will be getting back to Ilfracombe at around 8.40pm on Tuesday 21st May.

Here are some bed and breakfasts local to Ilfracombe (the first three of which offer free parking for the time that you are with us on Lundy):

If I am camping, where can I park in Ilfracombe?

If you are arranging a local accommodation to stay in before and after our time on Lundy, you should check whether you can leave your car there during your time on the island.

Public Parking:
See the local council website for details of Ilfracombe parking.
The best options for Long-stay parking during our time on the island are Marine Drive Car Park or Larkstone Lane Car Park. Both parking areas are on the other side of the harbour from the ferry, and you will need to leave around 15-20 minutes to walk around to the Lundy Booking Office meeting point for camping guests.

Parking nexts to the ferry on the harbour side is short-term only, so this isn’t a viable option for parking while you are with us on the island.

Can I choose my island accommodation?

We will assign guests to the particular island properties in an effort to best suit their group sizes and mobility requirements. Guests choose which accommodation level they require (see ‘What are the Prices?’). While each of the island properties is unique, all properties within the same level are of a comparable size and set-up.

What are the Booking Terms & Conditions?

The Terms & Conditions for booking this trip through our agency partners, Discover The World, can be seen here:

For bookings made from 1 July 2018:
CAS Sky Gathering – Booking Conditions – since 1 July 2018

For bookings made before 1 July 2018:
CAS Sky Gathering – Booking Conditions – before 1 July 2018

Please note: Even though we have had a lot of interest in this trip, there is still a minimum number of participants needed to enable us to operate it. If the minimum number of bookings required have not been received, we are entitled to cancel the trip providing we notify you of the cancellation not less than 120 days before departure. Please see the Terms & Conditions for more details.

Are dogs allowed?

Lundy is a working farm with large numbers of ewes and lambs at certain times of the year. For this reason, no dogs or pets are allowed onto the island except assistance dogs. Please let us know if you need to bring an assistance dog.

What about mobile phone coverage and WiFi?

All properties on the island have water, electricity (except for the most remote property, called Tibbetts), gas and drainage. Lundy being an island relies on a generator for electricity. This means that electricity is not usually available after midnight. There are no televisions, radios or telephones in the properties. There is no WiFi in the properties or in the Marisco Tavern. The mobile phone signal on Lundy is patchy but there is a pay phone in the Marisco Tavern.

Is there any luggage weight restriction on the boat?

Yes. The check-in luggage allowance for the island’s boat, the MS Oldenburg, is strictly 20kg per person (they can apply excess charges for overweight bags). Even if your bags are shared between a group, no single piece of luggage should weigh more than 20kg.

All luggage except hand luggage, is carried in the ship’s hold and then transferred to the top of the island by the Lundy staff before being delivered to your property. It can sometimes take a few hours for all the luggage to be distributed, so please plan your packing accordingly, and so we strongly advise that you keep any medication in your hand luggage.

What if I have dietary requirements?

If you need vegetarian or vegan food, please let us know at the time of booking. If you have any more specific dietary needs, please put a request in with the booking representative at Discover the World who will make a note about this and we’ll check whether it is something that we are able to accommodate.

Will it be suitable for children?

We will be very happy if you want to bring your children with you. At just 3 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, Lundy is a good size for children. While the talks will not be aimed specifically at younger audiences they should certainly hold the attention of any inquisitive child over the age of 10 years. We will have no childcare facilities available and you will, of course, be solely responsible for your children at all times.

If you would like to come as a family, ask the booking representative when you contact our agency partner Discover the World about availability of Triple or Quad properties (each of which have at least two bedrooms). Some of the Double properties also have an additional room that can be used for one or two children at an additional full-itinerary ticket price of £1010.00 per child.

What if I have mobility restrictions?

Generally speaking, there should not be the need for a great deal of walking by those who have concerns about mobility during the trip. But we will need to know before you make a booking if you have any mobility or access questions or concerns so that we can check that we’ll be able to best accommodate your needs. Please let the Discover the World booking representative know about any concerns before you book. They will give you a form to fill in and we will get back to you to confirm whether we envisage any likely difficulties.
