
While most examples of Cirrus have a delicate, translucent appearance (see the examples below), the species known as spissatus appears quite dense. This high ice-crystal cloud generally starts life as the spreading plume, or incus, of a Cumulonimbus storm cloud. Once the storm cloud below has rained itself away, the dense, ice-crystal canopy can remain for some time.
