Winterlight – A Sky Full of Clouds

Cloud Appreciation Society member, Mark Johnson, has recommended this music by Winterlight.

Composer, Tim Ingham, found he could use a laptop late at night once his family had retired for the night to create his own electronic version of the kind of warm, hazy sounds that he had gravitated to since his youth and recorded two singles as Winterlight for UK label Years Without Art.

Typhoon Mysteries

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theatre’ which he curates and each week he features a new movie.  Typhoon Mysteries features Typhoon Nepartak over the South China Sea.  Immensely powerful and dangerous, yet surprisingly serene from above.  It was filmed by astronauts on ISS 48, July 7, 2016.  Catherine Brisset plays a variation on Bach’s Sonata #2, the Grave movement, with such subtle and emotive touch. Her unique glass keyboard with fanciful metal shapes helps the mysterious sounds resonate.  

“The Watermill” by Ronald Binge

Pam Stevens sent us this music to watch clouds by.  “The Watermill” was composed by Ronald Binge in 1958.  The performers in this video are the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ernest Tomlinson.  Pam told us “this gentle, dreamy piece by Ronald Binge has great charm

The Coming of Autumn

This is an original composition by Kym “Bid” Bidstrup and he says of it “Once again, this track came with memories and murmurings of my time in England.

Stunning Aurora from ISS

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 and  Education Mission Specialist at the Association of Space Explorers introduced us to the ‘Earth Movie Theatre’.  This video beautifully shows the shimmering green aurora as a wonderful background for this musical improv. Steve Thomas plays guitar with Chris Cheek on alto sax. Their musical dance evokes the Aurora’s movement.

Special production for new “Bach Forest” in Germany – One Earth

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 and Education Mission Specialist at the Association of Space Explorers introduced us to the ‘Earth Movie Theatre’.  Working with world-class musicians they combine music with ISS moves of Earth. This production was in celebration of the new Bach Forest and the satellite image covers Ireland to Saudi Arabia at night.

The Bach Forest is situated in Leipzig and over the next few years a forest of approximately 29 hectares will be planted on the western side of Lake Störmthal. You can see more about it on the Bach Fest website

Sonatas for Earth

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theatre’ which he curates. In this musical video he welcomes us to Earth’s orbit, accompanied by three Bach Sonatas transcribed for guitar.  Each Sonata features four movements, offering space to reflect and explore the harmony of music while gazing at our planet below. These exquisite performances by Dr. Nicholas Goluses, a master guitarist and professor at the Eastman School of Music, are brought to life with stunning photography captured by astronauts of ISS Expedition 71 in 2024.

Greg West suggested “Slow Clouds” from the album “Roan Mountain Suite” by The Kruger Brothers and the Kontras Quartet for our music to watch clouds by section.

Shades of Blue

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theatre’ which he curates. Each week he features a new movie and this one is a montage of photos and music, celebrating One Earth – all in shades of blue.  Astronauts took these serene and beautiful photos during December 2023, on ISS Expedition 70.   All shades of blue, yet so diverse.  For the music, Steve Thomas crafted his dreamlike Guitarscape, resonating with these mesmerizing views.

Requiem for Earth

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theatre’ which he curates. Each week he features a new movie.  As part of the Earth Serenade series, enjoy Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem (Opus 45). This powerful music is performed by the Orchester & Chor of J. S. Bach-Stiftung in Switzerland. The music is set to images of Earth taken from the International Space Station.

Prelude in C – welcomes you to Namibia

Pathway to the Centre

Dan Barstow, Member 41,557 introduced us to the ‘Earth Music Theatre’ which he curates. Each week he features a new movie with one of the latest being ‘Pathway to the Centre’ which musically describes walking a labyrinth. Set to Bach’s Cello Suite 1 in G Major, performed by harpist Laura Zaerr, the journey takes you from serene clouds to the eye of a hurricane and back to serenity.

One Earth: Soaring Cello + Soprano as we fly over Mediterranean clouds

This lovely Earth movie combines heart-felt Bach music with a dream-like flight over clouds and night lights, from Ireland to Saudi Arabia and features movie taken by astronauts on the ISS. The music is Bach’s “Komm in Mein Herzenshaus” (Come into my Heart’s House), the 4th movement of “Ein Feste Burg is Unser Gott” (A strong fortress is our God).
